About Vincent Grippi

I Can’t Believe That’s a Keyword

Using Semrush, we hunt down bizarre (and totally real) search queries and try to answer them.

This Week’s Keyword: "Did Australia go to war with emus?"

Avg. Search Volume: 170 searches per month

Our Answer: Yes, Australia really did go to war with emus. And they lost too.

OpenAI To Show Content & Links In Response To Queries

OpenAI To Show Content & Links In Response To Queries

ChatGPT might be redefining the SEO landscape. Well, beyond giving marketers a tool to pump out cookie-cutter content to please the almighty algorithm, at least.

OpenAI's recent content licensing deal with The Financial Times suggests that ChatGPT might be evolving into a platform that could function more like a search engine, offering direct quotes and links in response to user queries. Unlike traditional content licensing, which primarily involves training data, this agreement is about incorporating content with proper attribution. This could allow publishers to gain traffic and visibility from ChatGPT, providing a new avenue for content discovery.

The deal indicates that ChatGPT users will see "select attributed summaries, quotes, and links to FT journalism" in response to queries. This shift could lead to ChatGPT becoming a significant traffic source for brands and publishers. However, questions remain about the extent of content that will be shown, whether OpenAI will require licensing deals for content inclusion, and if an opt-in system could be used.

Will marketers soon be adding GPT-SEO to their toolbelts anytime soon? Time will tell!

Google Can’t Quit Third-Party Cookies—Delays Shut Down for a Third Time

Google Can’t Quit Third-Party Cookies—Delays Shut Down for a Third Time

Third time isn’t a charm. And neither are third-party cookies.

Google Chrome is the world’s most popular browser and yet it continues to run late to the “cookieless future party,” as Google delays sunsetting third-party cookies for the third time. Apple’s Safari & Mozilla’s Firefox both old yellered third-party cookies in 2020. Google Chrome isn’t expecting to eliminate them until 2025. We’ll see if that actually sticks.

The decision to delay comes as the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority raised concerns about Google being a monopoly and them changing Chrome in a way that will favor its own advertising platform over competitors - more on that here (via AdExchanger).

For B2C healthcare marketers, the prolonged sunsetting of third-party cookies means little, as this technology isn’t HIPAA-compliant anyway. For you B2B folks, this means you can enjoy retargeting a little while longer…just don’t procrastinate on figuring out your strategy for the cookieless future 😉

Data Suggests Threads Is Seeing More Daily Users in the US Than Meta's X

Data Suggests Threads Is Seeing More Daily Users in the US Than Meta's X

Threads, Meta's platform designed to compete with X (FKA Twitter), is doing just that. According to Apptopia Inc. data, Threads has overtaken X in daily active users in the U.S., with Threads having 28 million daily active users in April, compared to X's 22 million. This marks a 21% decrease for X.  Threads still has a lot of ground to cover to match X's global scale. And the app leaves much to be desired in the way of real-time functionalities and browsing topics. Regardless, it’s strong start makes it ripe for consideration in your marketing mix.

Walmart to Close its 51 Health Centers and Virtual Care Service

Walmart to Close its 51 Health Centers and Virtual Care Service

Walmart is closing its 51 health centers and telehealth service after finding them unsustainable, citing reasons such as ballooning operating costs, lack of profitability, and the “the challenging reimbursement environment.”

Launched in 2019, the initiative had 51 health centers across five states, aiming to offer affordable healthcare. The closures follow plans to add more than two dozen health centers announced in March 2023 and reports of the retail giant eyeing a majority stake in ChenMed.

Despite the closures, Walmart continues to operate 4,600 pharmacies and over 3,000 vision centers.

TL;DR: Primary care continues to be a challenge for major retailers. Speaking of major retailers…

CVS Acquires Medicare Advantage Broker Hella Health

CVS Acquires Medicare Advantage Broker Hella Health

CVS Health acquired Hella+Health, a Medicare Advantage broker, to strengthen its digital services for seniors. Hella Health, founded in 2021, offers a wide range of MA plans and uses a digital platform for telephone-enabled shopping.

Interesting timing, considering Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services published a final rule last month that changes how insurance agents and brokers get paid for selling Medicare Advantage Plans (MAPs) and Medicare Part D Plans (PDPs). Amongst other things, the final rule is designed to prevent brokers from pushing beneficiaries toward specific plans just to get higher payouts from insurers.

News of the acquisition dropped one day before CVS’ Q1 2024 earnings call, which didn’t go over well. The company missed revenue and earnings expectations, leading to a 17% drop in stock value. Ouch.📉
