OpenAI’s Rockset Acquisition And How It May Impact Digital Marketing
OpenAI has recently acquired Rockset, a company known for its server-less search and analytics capabilities.
This move aims to enhance OpenAI's ability to process and analyze vast amounts of data more efficiently. Rockset's technology will be integrated into OpenAI's existing framework, potentially boosting the performance and scalability of AI models like ChatGPT. This acquisition is part of OpenAI's broader strategy to stay at the forefront of AI innovation by continuously improving its data handling and processing capabilities.
What it could mean for healthcare: Rockset's technology specializes in real-time indexing and querying of data, which can significantly improve the speed and efficiency of processing healthcare data. This capability is crucial for tasks like patient monitoring, real-time analytics in clinical settings, and managing large volumes of medical records efficiently.
What it could mean for marketing: Sam Altman has expressed that "the world doesn't need another Google - that would be boring."
He wasn't kidding.
This move underscores what we've been thinking all along
- OpenAI isn't striving to create a new and improved search engine to compete with Google. Instead, it's trying to revolutionize search altogether.
Will keywords and rankings will become a thing of the past? It's too early to tell. But as we learned in issue 005 of The Grip, users are not keen on AI search.

Google is Killing Infinite Scroll on Search Results
Google is discontinuing infinite scroll for search results, starting with desktop searches today and planned for mobile in the coming months. Continuous scroll is a Google Search feature where search results are automatically loaded as the user scrolls down the page, without requiring them to click to navigate to other result pages.
This change will see Google returning to traditional pagination on desktop and a "more results" button on mobile. According to a Google spokesperson, this update aims to improve search result speed by loading results only when explicitly requested by users, rather than automatically.
This change could impact SEO efforts because continuous scroll provided greater visibility to content ranked below the top 10 search results. As a result, marketers may experience a decrease in organic impressions and clicks for content that doesn't make it into Google's top 10 results for a specific keyword.

Google’s Delays Aside, Why Marketers Can’t Pause Post-Cookie Planning
As we covered in issue 001 of The Grip, Google continues to delay the sunsetting of third-party cookies from Chrome.
While the delay offers some relief to marketers lagging in post-cookie preparations, it underscores the complexity of adapting to new advertising practices. Many marketers remain unprepared, risking significant revenue losses.
More proactive marketing teams are using the extended timeframe to audit current strategies, explore alternative identifiers like email addresses, and test multiple post-cookie solutions to mitigate potential impacts on ad targeting and performance.
Marketers who wait for Google's final decision may find themselves unprepared for the inevitable changes (when they finally come!).

Lawmakers Seek Tougher AI Restrictions for Medicare Advantage
A bipartisan group of lawmakers is pressing the Biden administration to tighten restrictions on Medicare Advantage insurers' use of AI in coverage decisions.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently issued guidance on AI tools, but over 50 lawmakers want stricter regulations. They are calling for a full review of AI's role in claim denials and stricter oversight of algorithm-driven decisions.
The lawmakers' letter, led by Rep. Judy Chu (D-Calif.) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), argues that current AI tools lack transparency and could negatively impact patient care. They propose more stringent approval processes and time restrictions on termination notices.
This move reflects growing concern about AI's role in healthcare and the need for robust oversight to ensure patient safety and fair access to care. For more on this, check out issue 003 of The Grip.

AI Could Kill Creative Jobs That 'Shouldn’t' Have Been There in The First Place,’ OpenAI’s CTO Says
The rise of AI in the creative industry is sparking fears of job displacement, but OpenAI's CTO, Mira Murati, suggests that some of these jobs may not have been necessary in the first place.
Speaking at Dartmouth University, Murati emphasized that AI tools can enhance creativity and productivity, but acknowledged that job roles will inevitably change.
Murati's comments come amid significant concern from freelancers and creative professionals about the future of their work. While AI can handle repetitive tasks, it also has the potential to open new avenues for creative expression.
It's puzzling that, at a time when trust and acceptance of AI are crucial, OpenAI's executives persist in providing reasons for people to feel otherwise.

Google Perspectives Can Show Instagram Posts
Google is now displaying Instagram posts in its "Perspectives" tab on Google Search. This integration allows users to see Instagram content directly in their search results, providing a richer, more diverse set of perspectives on various topics for searchers and greater content visibility for creators. This update aims to enhance the search experience by incorporating more social media insights, giving users access to a wider array of human (hopefully) information.
This integration underscores the growing significance of social media in search and emphasizes the growing necessity for marketers to optimize their social content for search engines beyond those integrated in social platforms.
