AI Race Heats Up: How It Impacts Healthcare Marketers

Essential news and insights for bold healthcare marketers, brought to you by Grippi Media.

After years of being assured that HBO’s The Wire, is one of the greatest shows of all time, I finally committed to watching all 5 seasons to see what the hype is about.

For the uninitiated, each episode begins with a quote graphic that foreshadows its theme. That said, I felt inspired to kick off issue 3 of The Grip in the same fashion.

The great AI race is intensifying, as both OpenAI and Google unveiled major launches this week. While last week's rumors about OpenAI announcing a ChatGPT search feature on Monday (a day before Google’s I/O event) never materialized, Google still faces considerable challenges in the ongoing battle of AI and information discovery.

But don’t let all the back and forth between these AI heavyweights distract you from what else is going on in the space...

Amidst all of the buzz surrounding launch events this week, TikTok made an AI announcement of its own, which might indicate where the future of social media is headed.

Here’s what you can expect from this week’s issue of The Grip:

👉 OpenAI releases GPT-4o, a Faster Model That’s Free for all ChatGPT Users

👉 The Top AI Announcements from Google I/O

👉 OpenAI strikes Reddit deal to train its AI on your posts

👉 TikTok Will Now Label Content Created by External AI Tools

👉 Podcast Ad Revenue to Grow Double Digits Following Last Year’s Slump

👉 IHI Releases AI Recommendations for Patient Safety & Health System Leaders

All this and more in issue 003 of The Grip.

Go ahead and give it a read. And don’t forget to subscribe!

OpenAI releases GPT-4o, a Faster Model That’s Free for all ChatGPT Users

OpenAI has introduced GPT-4o (the “o” is for “omni”), their latest generative AI model designed to handle text, speech, and video in real-time. Building upon the capabilities of its predecessor, GPT-4, this model promises enhanced intelligence across various modalities.

GPT-4o enhances the user experience in ChatGPT by offering real-time responsiveness and improved voice recognition, enabling users to interact with ChatGPT more naturally, like a voice assistant...or like Joaquin Phoenix in Her. Moreover, it enhances ChatGPT's vision capabilities, allowing it to analyze images and answer related questions efficiently.

In addition to GPT-4o, OpenAI announced UI enhancements for ChatGPT, including a more conversational interface and a desktop version for macOS users. They also introduced the GPT Store, offering third-party chatbot creation tools to ChatGPT users. Free users can now access features previously behind a paywall, such as memory capabilities and web searches within ChatGPT.

ChatGPT Plus subscribers can already dive into GPT-4o. Access will slowly roll out to all ChatGPT users in the next few weeks. Free tier users can use GPT-4o only a limited number of times within a three hour window (more about this here). You can see which features are already available and which are coming soon here.

My Two Cents…

Customer Support: At first glance, this technology seems promising for customer support, but thinking about all the things that could go wrong makes me skeptical. Besides, customers already struggle with automated chatbots in order to reach human support (looking at you, Google Ads).

Is AI support the ultimate solution? Probably not. But can it help? Definitely.

Data Analysis: As with previous iterations of ChatGPT, Omni can help with content ideation and creation, sure. Check out our article on whether you should use AI for blog writing. But where I would find the most value is in advanced data analysis: breaking down complex charts, graphs and tables with pinpoint accuracy, in real-time, providing deeper insights. We’re well on our way to getting there and I think Omni is a significant step in the right direction.

Other Benefits: I also think there could be potential health benefits to using a voice assistant. As someone with two cervical disc herniations, I can tell you that the less time I spend staring at screens, the better. I use voice-to-text to create much of my content already, so I am willing to welcome Omni’s voice capabilities with open arms if it does everything it says it can.

Lastly, I think the real-time visual/audio component can be instrumental in tutoring students. For many, access to quality tutoring is not a reality. If Omni can deliver on its promise, I think it can be instrumental in expanding education opportunities for students of all ages.

The Top AI Announcements from Google I/O

Meanwhile, in the adjacent running lane, Google announced a ton of AI product launches at its I/O event on Tuesday. “AI” was spoken over 120 times at this event and all the announcements ranged from impressive to meh. Here’s what marketers need to know:

Gemini: Google’s large language model (LLM) got several upgrades, including a new, faster version (Gemini 1.5 Flash) and a more powerful version with a larger context window (Gemini 1.5 Pro). Gemini will also be replacing Google Assistant on Android phones. Google is making its AI chatbot Gemini smarter by allowing natural conversations with voice interruptions and adapting to speech patterns.

Launching later in 2024, Gemini Live will use your phone's camera to see and understand your surroundings, allowing it to answer questions about what you're looking at. This advancement is based on Project Astra, Google's effort to create AI that can understand the world in real-time through various means. Unlike Omni, Gemini Live will not be free, as it will only be available to Gemini Advanced subscribers.

Google Search: Google Search is getting a major AI upgrade with features like AI-generated overviews and summaries of search results. If you’ve been a Search Labs user, then you’ve already spent significant time playing with these features, which were previously known as Search Generative Experience (SGE). Other updates include AI-organized search results pages (which basically truncates and organizes results by theme), and the ability to use video to search.

Veo: Google unveiled Veo, a new text-to-video generator that can produce high-quality videos in 1080p resolution. Veo appears to be Google's response to OpenAI's text-to-image model, Sora. Both models aren’t currently available to the general public.

Imagen 3: The next generation of Google’s text-to-image generator, Imagen 3, was also announced. It can produce more realistic images with “better text rendering.”

Other announcements: Google also announced new features for Gemini Advanced, including live chat and custom “Gems,” which are personalized versions of Gemini tailored to specific tasks or niches. They also revealed that they will be integrating Gemini with Gmail and Google Workspace - like a Microsoft Copilot for Google work products.

Google also teased a prototype of AR smart glasses, which looked like AI-enhanced Wayfarers with a HUD - a fashionable upgrade of sorts from the late Google Glass. Not much detail is available on these yet. However, it looks like the “smart glasses era” is near, with Apple rumored to also be developing their own AI-enhanced glasses. This might explain all of the emphasis on real-time AI interactivity,..

My two cents…

Per usual, Google overcomplicates its offerings with confusing communications/product names etc. The TL;DR is that Gemini pretty much offers much of what Omni does, except it relies on several other AI models to do so, whereas Omni does it all by itself. Regardless, it’s clear Google and OpenAI are racing each other at the head of the AI pack.

That said, it looks like the future of the AI race will be taking place on mobile devices, with Google first dominating Android, while racing against OpenAI to partner with Apple to bring its AI technology to iPhones.

It looks like Google users aren’t enthralled with its AI-generated search summaries

Many marketers are concerned with Google rolling out AI-enhanced search results, as fear of a zero-click apocalypse suddenly becomes more palpable. I did a video on this a few months ago, where I explain why AI-generated search results won’t be the evil that many marketers expect.

In any case, Google is in a tight spot at the moment. It can’t afford to fall behind in the AI race, but it really can’t afford to lose footing with its flagship product - its search engine. If OpenAI truly ends up releasing it’s own search feature for ChatGPT, things will get very interesting.

One final thought: If Google can successfully roll Gemini into GA4, Search Console, and Looker Studio for better data analysis, that would be a game-changer for the countless marketers who rely on these tools.

OpenAI Strikes Reddit Deal to Train its AI on Your Posts

OpenAI Strikes Reddit Deal to Train its AI on Your Posts

OpenAI has struck a deal with Reddit, Inc. for access to real-time content from Reddit’s data API. This allows OpenAI to incorporate Reddit content (comments included) into ChatGPT and other products. In return, Reddit will use OpenAI’s large language models to introduce AI-powered features for users and moderators. OpenAI will also serve as an advertising partner on Reddit.

Remember a minute ago, when I said "If OpenAI truly ends up releasing it’s own search feature for ChatGPT, things will get very interesting?" Well, this deal is a significant step in that direction.

Google recently sealed a $60 million deal with Reddit to increase the visibility of its content within Google's search results, amongst other things. This move comes as more users add "Reddit" to their Google searches to find answers from real people, reflecting a growing struggle to find the information they need on Google alone.

This is especially the case with younger users. According to Google itself, 40% of Gen Z users turn to other platforms, like social media instead of Google to search for information.

The OpenAI deal will bring that sought-after human element to ChatGPT, which could potentially rival Google search if we see a trend of users turn to AI for more efficient, personalized and relatable answers.

Sam Altman wasn't kidding when he said "the world doesn't need another Google." Perhaps OpenAI wasn't working towards building a search engine at all. In fact, it looks like they might be trying to create a whole new way to search for information altogether.

It's worth noting that Sam Altman is Reddit's 3rd largest shareholder.

TikTok Will Now Label Content Created by External AI Tools

TikTok Will Now Label Content Created by External AI Tools

TikTok is taking significant steps to enhance transparency regarding the use of AI in content creation on its platform. Collaborating with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), TikTok is implementing new AI labels to identify content modified by AI, both from external sources and its in-stream generative AI tools. It will identify AI-generated content through a process facilitated by C2PA, which involves attaching metadata to content, signifying that it was created using AI.

TikTok is also partnering with MediaWise to develop educational campaigns to help users identify AI content and understand its potential misuse, particularly important in the context of increasing AI-generated content online.

While TikTok's efforts mark a significant stride in improving AI transparency and media literacy, challenges still remain. For starters, not all generative AI tools are participating in the C2PA project, potentially leaving gaps in metadata markers. Nonetheless, these measures represent an important move towards combating the spread of AI-generated fakes, particularly crucial in safeguarding against misinformation during events such as elections.

Other notable participants in the C2PA include Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Adobe. Tik Tok is the first social network to participate. Afterall, it could use the good PR, considering its not-so-favorable standing with US Government.

Podcast Ad Revenue to Grow Double Digits Following Last Year’s Slump

Podcast Ad Revenue to Grow Double Digits Following Last Year’s Slump

Podcast advertising revenues grew by 5% in 2023, reaching $1.9 billion, a slower pace compared to previous years due to challenges faced by mid-tier companies in the advertising climate. However, the sector is expected to bounce back with a 12% growth to over $2 billion in revenue in the current year, per the IAB.

This growth will be driven by various initiatives by publishers, including measurement improvements, programmatic purchasing, live events, aggressive show promotion, and the development of video podcasts.

The sector is forecasted to reach $2.6 billion by 2026, with podcasts offering advertisers unique opportunities through innovations like live events, video podcasting, and the strong connections podcasters establish with their audiences.

Healthcare podcast listenership is up 44% since 2019, with “health” being tied with “sports” as the 4th most popular genre in the medium.

Grippi Media did an extensive research report on the healthcare podcast space, which you can read here.
